When I first knew Mike, we lived in a small village in Scotland. It was very different f
rom Mike’s life in London now. We went to school together on our bicycles. Every morning I went to his house and knocked on the door. Every morning Mike’s mum said, “I’m sorry, he’s a bit late this morning”, and so I had to wait. Each day we were late for school, and I remember the teacher got very annoyed with us. I never told her we were late because of Mike. Now, 25 years later, I play tennis with Mike. I usually drive him to the tennis club. I go to his flat and he opens the door and says, “I’m sorry. I’m a bit late today.” The only reason he wasn’t late for his own wedding is that we lied to him about the time! As boys we spent a lot of time out exploring on our bikes. We went walking and fishing. I didn’t like fishing because I couldn’t swim. Probably the funniest thing we did was when we stole a bottle of whiskey from my Dad. We cycled about 5 miles away to drink it in one of our favorite places. When we finished drinking it, we couldn’t cycle back – it was a long, slow walk. I’m sure we looked awful. We still do, when we come back from the pub on Friday nights. Nothing’s changed really. Oh, and I still can’t swim.

My aunt Edith was a widow(寡妇) of 50, working

My aunt Edith was a widow(寡妇) of 50, working as a secretary, when doctors discovered what was then thought to be a very serious heart disease.

Aunt Edith doesn’t accept defeat easily. She began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, of Houston, Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same disease. The article said his fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn’t possibly pay them. But could he tell her of someone whose fees she could pay?

So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting live: her three children, who would be on their own in three or four more years, her little-girl dream of traveling and seeing the world. There wasn’t a word of self-pity----only warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.

A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn’t wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud:

Your beautiful letter moved me very deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation.

Signed: Michael DeBakey.

阅读文章,回答下列各题: As we know, if we want to keep our healthy and have a strong body,
our eating habits are very important in our daily life. There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice cream than meat and rice. Actually, sweets and ice cream are not bad for the stomach if we eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite. Meanwhile, it is important for us to eat our meal at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it shows that our bodies need food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. When we are worded, we may not want to, eat, either. A long time ago, in England, some judges used to decide whether, a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not swallow the bread, it was a sign that he wasn t telling the troth. Although this seems very strange and rather foolish, it is indeed an excellent way of finding out the truth. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in swallowing anything dry. He loses his appetite and does not want to eat anything if he is worrying something. We have to develop good ,eating habits because__________

A.we want to be healthy and strong

B.we want to enjoy our food

C.we want to eat more

D.we want to save time
